This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 01 May 2019.

This dataset is the definitive set of community board/local board boundaries for 2019 as defined by the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission, and maintained by Stats NZ. This version contains 108 community boards and 21 Auckland local boards, excluding area outside community board. Community boards are set up under the Local Government Act 2002 and Local Electoral Act 2001. Their purpose is to administer the affairs of communities with populations not less than 1,500 within rural, urban, or metropolitan districts of a territorial authority. A community board’s functions, powers, and duties are delegated at the discretion of its parent territorial authority and these may differ between community boards. Community boards and their boundaries are reviewed in the year before the three-yearly local government elections. Community boards are numbered based on their corresponding territorial authority. Each community board has a unique five-digit number. The first three digits refer to the territorial authority that the community board lies within. The following two digits are sequential, and represent the number of community boards within the territorial authority. For example, Tararua District (041) has two community boards numbered 04101 and 04102. The rest of the district is not represented by a community board and is coded 04199 (Area Outside Community). Some territorial authorities do not have community boards and, if they do, the community boards do not necessarily cover the whole territorial authority area. The following table lists the total number of community boards by year:Year Community board totals 2000 147 2001 147 2002 147 2003 147 2004 147 2005 144 2006 v1 144 2006 v2 144 2007 144 2008 143 2009 143 2010 143 2011 137 2012 137 2013 137 2014 130 2015 130 2016 130 2017 129 2018 129 2019 129 Local boards also fall within the community board classification. Local boards were introduced as part of the new local government arrangements for Auckland in 2010. Local boards share governance with a council’s governing body and each has complementary responsibilities, guaranteed by legislation. Local boards can propose bylaws and they gather community views on local and regional matters. Local legislation enacted in 2012 allows for the establishment of local boards in areas of new unitary authorities that are predominantly urban and have a population of more than 400,000. The boundaries of local boards cannot be abolished or changed except through a reorganisation process. There are 21 local boards in the Auckland Council.Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 29 Jun 2020.

This dataset is the definitive version of statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries concorded to higher geographies as at 1 January 2019 as defined by Stats NZ.

This statistical area 2 higher geographies file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates SA2s to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: territorial authority (TA) and regional council (REGC).

Statistical area 2 was created as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaces the 1992 New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The statistical standard for geographic areas is to be used from 2018 (SSGA18). It defines the Stats NZ input and output geographic classifications and describes their primary purposes, and sets out requirements and guidelines for the creation and maintenance of statistical geographies.

Statistical area 2 (SA2) provides higher aggregations of population data than can be provided at the statistical area 1 (SA1) level. The SA2 geography aims to reflect communities that interact together socially and economically. In populated areas, SA2s generally contain similar sized populations.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset is the definitive set of the meshblock (MB) inside centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released meshblock boundaries as at 1 January 2019.

The "inside" centroid is a point which always falls inside each meshblock polygon as this is often desirable in some users cases. The placement of the point is typically in the widest part of the polygon. The algorithms used are proprietary to ESRI and are related to label placement.

Note that the "inside" centroid is NOT always the same as the center of gravity ("true" centroid) of the polygon as in some situations the true centroid may fall outside the meshblock geometry. The dataset contains the EASTING and NORTHING attributes of the centroid point in NZGD2000 New Zealand Transverse Mercator (EPSG:2193) and LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the centroid point in decimal degrees in WGS1984 (EPSG:4326) projection.

The 2013 Census usually resident population count, household, and occupied dwellings (private and non-private) data has been rebased to the 2018 meshblock geography and is shown according to the new statistical geographies and urban rural classification developed as a result of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) review. The data is experimental and is provided as a guide to understanding the impact of the new geographic boundaries on the previous census counts.

Note: This data has been randomly rounded to protect confidentiality. Individual figures may not add up to totals, and values for the same data may vary in different tables

This dataset is the definitive set of statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. SA2 is a new output geography that provides higher aggregations of population data than can be provided at the statistical area 1 (SA1) level. SA2s are defined at meshblock and SA1 levels.

The 2018 Census commuter view dataset contains the employed census usually resident population count aged 15 years and over by statistical area 2 for the main means of travel to work variable from the 2018 Census. The geography corresponds to 2018 boundaries.

This dataset is the base data for the ‘There and back again: our daily commute’ competition.

This 2018 Census commuter view dataset is displayed by statistical area 2 geography and contains from-to (journey) information on an individual's usual residence and workplace address* by main means of travel to work.

* Workplace address is coded from information supplied by respondents about their workplaces. Where respondents do not supply sufficient information, their responses are coded to ‘not further defined’. The 2018 Census commuter view datasets excludes these ‘not further defined’ areas, as such the sum of the counts for each region in this dataset may not be equal to the total employed census usually resident population count aged 15 years and over for that region.

It is recommended that this dataset be downloaded as either a CSV or a file geodatabase.

This dataset can be used in conjunction with the following spatial files by joining on the statistical area 2 code values:

· Statistical Area 2 2018 (generalised)

· Statistical Area 2 2018 (Centroid Inside)

The data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules. Values of -999 indicate suppressed data.

Data quality ratings for 2018 Census variables, summarising the quality rating and priority levels for 2018 Census variables, are available.

For information on the statistical area 2 geography please refer to the Statistical standard for geographic areas 2018.
