This dataset is the definitive set of annually released community board/local board boundaries at 1 January 2018, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. Community boards are set up under the Local Government Act 2002 and Local Electoral Act 2001.

Local boards also fall within the community board classification. Local boards were introduced as part of the new local government arrangements for Auckland in 2010.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released regional council constituency boundaries at 1 January 2019 as defined by the regional councils and/or Local Government Commission, and maintained by Stats NZ. Constituencies are established under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from the division of a region for electoral purposes. If a regional council decides to have a Māori constituency, the constituencies within the region are known as general constituencies and Māori constituencies. Constituencies are divisions of regional council areas. They are defined at meshblock level.

Statistical Area 2 2019 (Centroid True) is the true centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries for 2019.

The "true" centroid is the centre of mass of that polygon, such that if some flat substance of uniform thickness and density were cut into the shape of that polygon, then that object would balance at the centroid. The centroid is a useful way of summarizing the location of a set of polygons as points, particularly when used for comparative analysis.

Note that the centroid could potentially fall outside the SA2 polygon, depending on the shape of the polygon. The dataset contains the EASTING and NORTHING attributes of the centroid point in NZGD2000 New Zealand Transverse Mercator (EPSG:2193) and LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the centroid point in decimal degrees in WGS1984 (EPSG:4326) projection.

This dataset was first added to Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 06 Dec 2020.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released urban rural boundaries for 2021 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 722 urban rural categories.

The urban rural geography was introduced as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaced the New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The urban rural geography replaces the (NZSAC92) urban area geography.

Urban rural is an output geography that classifies New Zealand into areas that share common urban or rural characteristics and is used to disseminate a broad range of Stats NZ’s social, demographic and economic statistics.

The urban rural indicator complements the urban rural geography and is an attribute in this dataset. Further information on the urban rural indicator is available on the Stats NZ classification and coding tool ARIA.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This dataset is the definitive set of the annually released urban rural boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. Urban rural is an output geography that classifies New Zealand into areas that share common urban or rural characteristics. Urban areas are built from the Statistical Area 2 geography, while rural and water areas are built from the Statistical Area 1 geography. Urban areas are statistically defined areas with no administrative or legal basis. The urban rural indicator is an attribute of this classification and provides additional information about a location's urban or rural nature.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. These meshblocks are used as a basis to build the electoral population for each electorate. We calculated the electoral populations from the 2018 Census data using the formula specified in the Electoral Act 1993 and then apply two confidentiality rules: suppression of all unrounded counts below six (displayed as: ‘-999’) and random rounding to base three. Since the electoral populations of each meshblock are randomly rounded, the count for each meshblock could be different to the raw total by up to two when compared with the total electoral population for meshblocks from another source.

Data is provided with tohutō/macrons (UTF-8 format). To support users with the compatibility of the data and the applications they might be using, additional fields are also provided in ASCII format.

Meshblocks, which aggregate to form electorates, are updated annually by Stats NZ. The 2020 electorate boundaries reflect a number of minor technical adjustments to meshblock boundaries, not involving population i.e. to follow the correct line of a river or road. The adjustments are visible in a small number of land and coastal areas where electorate boundaries otherwise unchanged between 2014 and 2020 do not exactly align.

Note: This dataset contains the meshblock MB2020_V2_00 (version 2), a major released version of the annually released meshblock boundaries as at 17 April 2020. This version contains 53,582 meshblocks, or an additional two when compared with MB2020_V1_00 (excluding the 16 non-digitised meshblocks). This version reflects changes made to meshblocks for the 2019/2020 Representation Commission.
