The geographic areas file 2017 is a downloadable csv file that classifies meshblocks into larger geographic areas, such as area units, territorial authorities, and regional councils. You can use this areas file, also known as a concordance file, to see how the various geographic boundaries link together.

For each meshblock, there is a series of codes that link to any meshblock-defined geographic area. All areas are set as at 1 January of the specified year. Concordance files are available from different years, to enable data for the same area classification to be compared over time.

The areas files can be used in conjunction with the geographic boundary files available on Stats NZ's Geographic Data Service.

This Meshblock Higher Geographies 2017 (high definition) file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates meshblocks to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. A high definition version is the highest geographic resolution geometry and is aligned to the LINZ cadastre.
The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: area unit (AU2017), community board (CB2017), constituency (CON2017), Māori constituency (MCON2017), regional council (REGC2017), subdivision (TASUB2017), territorial authority (TA2017), urban area (UA2017) and ward (WARD2017).

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

For further information on individual higher geographies, refer to their metadata.

This dataset is the definitive set of ward boundaries at 1 January 2017 as defined by the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission, but maintained by Statistics New Zealand (the custodian).

Wards were originally set up within any territorial authority with a population of at least 20,000. Wards are defined under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from dividing a territorial authority for electoral purposes. The ward system was designed to allow for the recognition of communities within a territorial authority and to increase community involvement in the local government system.

This dataset is the definitive set of urban area boundaries for 2017 as defined by Statistics New Zealand.

Urban areas are statistically defined areas with no administrative or legal basis. Urban area populations are defined internationally as towns with populations of 1,000 or more. The urban area classification is designed to identify concentrated urban or semi-urban settlements without the distortions of administrative boundaries. Urban areas are made up of complete meshblocks and area units. Rural centres are also defined in the urban area field.

This dataset is the definitive set of regional council Māori constituency boundaries for 2017 as defined by the regional councils and Local Government Commission but maintained by Statistics New Zealand (the custodian).

Māori constituencies are established under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from the division of a region for electoral purposes.

Māori constituencies are divisions of regional council areas. They are created, based on population, to be the voting areas within councils. Māori constituencies are defined at meshblock level, and do not coincide with area units.

This dataset is the definitive set of meshblock boundaries for 2017 as defined by Statistics New Zealand.

Statistics New Zealand maintains an annual meshblock pattern for collecting and producing statistical data. This allows data to be compared over time. A meshblock is the smallest geographic unit for which statistical data is collected and processed by Statistics New Zealand. A meshblock is defined by a geographic area, which can vary in size from part of a city block to a large area of rural land. Each meshblock borders on another to form a network covering all of New Zealand, including coasts and inlets and extending out to the 200-mile economic zone. Meshblocks are added together to build up larger geographic areas such as area units and urban areas. They are also used to define electoral districts, territorial authorities, and regional councils.
