This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 29 Jun 2020.

This dataset is the definitive version of statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries concorded to higher geographies as at 1 January 2019 as defined by Stats NZ.

This statistical area 2 higher geographies file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates SA2s to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: territorial authority (TA) and regional council (REGC).

Statistical area 2 was created as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaces the 1992 New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The statistical standard for geographic areas is to be used from 2018 (SSGA18). It defines the Stats NZ input and output geographic classifications and describes their primary purposes, and sets out requirements and guidelines for the creation and maintenance of statistical geographies.

Statistical area 2 (SA2) provides higher aggregations of population data than can be provided at the statistical area 1 (SA1) level. The SA2 geography aims to reflect communities that interact together socially and economically. In populated areas, SA2s generally contain similar sized populations.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset is the definitive set of the annually released regional council Māori constituency boundaries at 1 January 2019 as defined by the regional councils and/or Local Government Commission, and maintained by Stats NZ. Māori constituencies are established under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from the division of a region for electoral purposes. Māori constituencies are divisions of regional council areas.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released regional council constituency boundaries at 1 January 2018 as defined by the regional councils and/or Local Government Commission, and maintained by Stats NZ. Constituencies are established under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from the division of a region for electoral purposes. If a regional council decides to have a Māori constituency, the constituencies within the region are known as general constituencies and Māori constituencies. Constituencies are divisions of regional council areas. They are defined at meshblock level.

This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 07 May 2021.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released meshblock boundaries for 2021 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 53,598 meshblocks.

Stats NZ maintains an annual meshblock geography for collecting and producing statistical data. This allows data to be compared over time. A meshblock is the smallest geographic unit for which statistical data is collected and processed by Stats NZ. A meshblock is defined by a geographic area, which can vary in size from part of a city block to a large area of rural land. Each meshblock borders on another to form a network covering all of New Zealand, including coasts and inlets and extending out to the 200-mile economic zone. Meshblocks are added together to build up larger geographic areas such as statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), and urban rural. They are also used to define electoral districts, territorial authorities, and regional councils.

The following 16 meshblocks are outside the 12 mile limit and are not held in digitised form: 0016901, 0016902, 1588000, 3166401, 3166402, 3166600, 3166710, 3166711, 3195000, 3196001, 3196002, 3196003, 3196004, 3196005, 3196006, 3196007.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

The meshblock classification can also be downloaded from the Stats NZ classification and concordance tool Ariā.

This dataset is the definitive set of statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. SA2 is a new output geography that provides higher aggregations of population data than can be provided at the statistical area 1 (SA1) level. SA2s are defined at meshblock and SA1 levels.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released territorial authority boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. A territorial authority is defined under the Local Government Act 2002 as a city or a district council. Territorial authorities are the second tier of local government in New Zealand, below regional councils.

The 2013 Census usually resident population count, household, and occupied dwellings (private and non-private) data has been rebased to the 2018 meshblock geography and is shown according to the new statistical geographies and urban rural classification developed as a result of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) review. The data is experimental and is provided as a guide to understanding the impact of the new geographic boundaries on the previous census counts.

Note: This data has been randomly rounded to protect confidentiality. Individual figures may not add up to totals, and values for the same data may vary in different tables
