This Meshblock Higher Geographies 2017 (high definition) file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates meshblocks to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. A high definition version is the highest geographic resolution geometry and is aligned to the LINZ cadastre.
The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: area unit (AU2017), community board (CB2017), constituency (CON2017), Māori constituency (MCON2017), regional council (REGC2017), subdivision (TASUB2017), territorial authority (TA2017), urban area (UA2017) and ward (WARD2017).

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This is the definitive set of area unit boundaries for 2006 as defined by Statistics New Zealand as at 1 January 2006.
Area units are aggregations of adjacent meshblocks with coterminous boundaries to form a single unbroken surface area (land and/or water). Exceptions to this rule are some area units comprising collections of geographically related inlets and marinas.
In an urban location, an area unit is often a collection of city blocks, while in rural situations area units may be equated to localities or communities. Area units must either define or aggregate to define urban areas, rural centres, statistical areas, territorial authorities, and regional councils.
Each area unit must be a single geographic entity with a unique name. The area unit pattern is revised once every five years in the year immediately before a Census of Population and Dwellings. There may also be changes in other years, in conjunction with local body boundary changes. Statistics New Zealand maintains a concordance file to ensure boundaries relating to earlier area unit patterns can also be generated.

This dataset is the definitive version of the annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries concorded to higher geographies at 1 January 2018. This statistical area 1 higher geographies 2018 file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates SA1s to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: regional council (REGC2018), statistical area 2 (SA22018), territorial authority (TA2018), urban rural (UR2018), and urban rural indicator (IUR2018).The following geographies were introduced in 2018: statistical area 1 (SA12018), statistical area 2 (SA22018), urban rural (UR2018), and urban rural indicator (IUR2018). These new geographies are part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaces the 1992 New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The statistical standard for geographic areas is to be used from 2018 (SSGA18). It defines the Stats NZ input and output geographic classifications and describes their primary purposes, and sets out requirements and guidelines for the creation and maintenance of statistical geographies. Statistical area geographies are aggregations of meshblocks optimised to be of similar population sizes to enable the release of low-level data. They are non-administrative areas that are in between meshblocks and territorial authorities in size. Statistical areas either define or aggregate to define urban rural areas, territorial authorities, and regional councils.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Please note that a review of SA2 names was undertaken in early 2018. The review addressed issues with inconsistent naming and applied corrections, resulting in an update to this dataset applied in May 2018. All SA2 codes are unchanged.

In New Zealand, internal migration is typically the most difficult component of net migration’s contribution to subnational population change to measure. Internal migrants are not required to register their moves with any agency. The five-yearly census of population and dwellings has included a question on “usual residence five years ago” since 1971, which has been the authoritative data source for measuring internal migration. However, the infrequency of the collection (every five years), and the ‘snapshot’ nature of a transition-based measure are significant limitations. Other measures of annual subnational population change, such as the Treasury’s Insights tool, provide estimates of internal migration flows between TAs by using linked administrative data. Their approach identifies a set of decision rules for assigning location to individuals, based on a quality assessment of a wide range of address sources in the IDI (Where we come from, where we go). The TA location transitions provide the basis for deriving statistics of annual internal migration as demonstrated by the Insights tool. The data published with this report is the first series we’ve created by estimating all internal migration flows using a movement-based approach. From individuals’ unique address notification histories in key data sources, the paired origin and destination locations defined individuals’ movements. Traditionally, we combined change of address data from a range of administrative sources with other information on international migration to produce estimates of net migration for broad subnational areas. Now, we can derive direct estimates of movements from address histories from the anonymised unit record information of address notifications in the IDI. This gives a better understanding of people’s movements within New Zealand. Internal migration information is of great interest to local and central government, businesses, and communities. Churn and turnover of populations at local area level is one of the contributors of subnational population change, in both size and characteristics.

MB2018_V1_00_Centroid_Inside is the inside centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released meshblock boundaries as at 1 January 2018.The "inside" centroid is a point which always falls inside each meshblock polygon as this is often desirable in some users cases. The placement of the point is typically in the widest part of the polygon. The algorithms used are proprietary to ESRI and are related to label placement. Note that the "inside" centroid is NOT always the same as the center of gravity ("true" centroid) of the polygon as in some situations the true centroid may fall outside the meshblock geometry. The dataset contains the EASTING and NORTHING attributes of the centroid point in NZGD2000 New Zealand Transverse Mercator (EPSG:2193) and LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the centroid point in decimal degrees in WGS1984 (EPSG:4326) projection.
