This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 30 Jan 2020.

This dataset contains the annually released regional council boundaries for 2020 as defined by the regional councils and/or Local Government Commission and maintained by Stats NZ (the custodian), clipped to coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and so does not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. This version contains 17 categories.

The regional council is the top tier of local government in New Zealand. There are 16 regional councils in New Zealand (defined by Part 1 of Schedule 2 of the Local Government Act 2002). Eleven are governed by an elected regional council, while five are governed by territorial authorities (the second tier of local government), who also perform the functions of a regional council and are known as unitary authorities.

Auckland Council unitary authority was formed in 2010, under the Local Government (Tamaki Makarau Reorganisation) Act 2009, replacing the Auckland Regional Council and seven territorial authorities. The seaward boundary of any coastal regional council is the twelve-mile New Zealand territorial limit. Regional councils are defined at meshblock and statistical area 2

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 03 May 2019.

This dataset is the definitive version of the annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries concorded to higher geographies at 1 January 2019.

This statistical area 1 higher geographies 2019 file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates SA1s to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: regional council (REGC2019), statistical area 2 (SA22019), territorial authority (TA2019), urban rural (UR2019), and urban rural indicator (IUR2019).The following geographies were introduced in 2018: statistical area 1 (SA12018), statistical area 2 (SA22019), urban rural (UR2019), and urban rural indicator (IUR2019).

Statistical area 1 (SA1) was created as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaces the 1992 New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92).
The statistical standard for geographic areas is to be used from 2018 (SSGA18). It defines the Stats NZ input and output geographic classifications and describes their primary purposes, and sets out requirements and guidelines for the creation and maintenance of statistical geographies. Statistical area geographies are aggregations of meshblocks optimised to be of similar population sizes to enable the release of low-level data. They are non-administrative areas that are in between meshblocks and territorial authorities in size. Statistical areas either define or aggregate to define urban rural areas, territorial authorities, and regional councils.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released community board/local board boundaries at 1 January 2018, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. Community boards are set up under the Local Government Act 2002 and Local Electoral Act 2001.

Local boards also fall within the community board classification. Local boards were introduced as part of the new local government arrangements for Auckland in 2010.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released regional council constituency boundaries at 1 January 2018, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. Constituencies are established under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from the division of a region for electoral purposes. If a regional council decides to have a Māori constituency, the constituencies within the region are known as general constituencies and Māori constituencies. Constituencies are divisions of regional council areas. They are defined at meshblock level.

This dataset is the definitive set of the annually released urban rural boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. Urban rural is an output geography that classifies New Zealand into areas that share common urban or rural characteristics. Urban areas are built from the Statistical Area 2 geography, while rural and water areas are built from the Statistical Area 1 geography. Urban areas are statistically defined areas with no administrative or legal basis. The urban rural indicator is an attribute of this classification and provides additional information about a location's urban or rural nature.

Statistical Area 2 2019 (Centroid True) is the true centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries for 2019.

The "true" centroid is the centre of mass of that polygon, such that if some flat substance of uniform thickness and density were cut into the shape of that polygon, then that object would balance at the centroid. The centroid is a useful way of summarizing the location of a set of polygons as points, particularly when used for comparative analysis.

Note that the centroid could potentially fall outside the SA2 polygon, depending on the shape of the polygon. The dataset contains the EASTING and NORTHING attributes of the centroid point in NZGD2000 New Zealand Transverse Mercator (EPSG:2193) and LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the centroid point in decimal degrees in WGS1984 (EPSG:4326) projection.

This dataset contains occupied and unoccupied private dwelling counts from the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses, with percentage changes between the 2013 and 2018 Censuses, by regional council.

These regional council boundaries extend to the 12 mile limit and are as at 1 January 2018, for further information see Regional Council 2018 (generalised).

This data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality, for further information see 2018 confidentiality rules.

Note: the 2018 Census counted fewer dwellings in the Marlborough region than existed at census time. This was mainly in the Marlborough Sounds. If you intend to use dwelling counts at this geography, please contact censusrequests@stats.govt.nz for more information.

For further information see the attachments below: Information about the data (2018 census private dwellings by REGC2018), 2018 census private dwellings by REGC2018 lookup, 2018 census private dwellings by REGC2018.
