The first Māori ward was established by representation review in 2019 and appears in the 2020 geographic boundaries released by Stats NZ. The first Māori ward to be created is Wairoa Māori ward (02901) in the Wairoa District. Māori ward boundaries are defined at meshblock level.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This dataset was first added to Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 23 Jun 2022.

This dataset is the provisional 2023 dataset for Māori ward. The final 2023 layer is scheduled to be published on 8 December 2022 as part of the annual boundary release.

The intention of providing this provisional dataset is to make available the boundaries that will be used for the local body elections being held in October 2022.

This dataset is the provisional set of Māori ward boundaries for 2023 as defined by the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission but maintained by Stats NZ (the custodian). This version contains 34 Māori wards (excluding Area Outside Māori Ward). 33 new Māori wards have been added to the provisional 2023 classification.

The Local Electoral Act 2001 provides that Māori wards may be established in territorial authorities.

Māori wards are numbered based on their corresponding territorial authority. Each Māori ward has a unique five-digit code. The first three digits represent the territorial authority that the Māori ward lies within. The following two digits are sequential and represent the number of Māori wards within a territorial authority.

Māori ward boundaries are defined at meshblock level. In the provisional 2023 classification 29 territorial authorities have Māori wards.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. Note: Waikato District uses a double vowel instead of a macron (Maaori) and Tararua District does not use a macron (Maori). The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

A prototype population grid using the 2018 Estimate Resident Population (ERP). Population estimates by SA1s are used as an input to derive population grids. These estimates are not official statistics. They’re derived as a customised dataset used to produce the experimental population grids.

This is one of three resolutions of the national statistical grid, 1 kilometre, 500 metres and 250 metres, where the resolution is the length of one side of the square grid cell.

The Estimated Resident Population (ERP) by Statistical Area 1 (SA1), rounded to the nearest 10, was proportionally divided between private and some nonprivate dwelling point locations from the Stats NZ Statistical Location Register. The dwellings were spatially joined to the ERP SA1 to calculate the number of dwellings within each SA1. The SA1 ERP divided by the number of dwellings gave the number of people per dwelling for each SA1. The people per dwelling was spatially joined back to the dwelling dataset then spatially joined to the grid with the option chosen to sum the dwelling population within each grid cell. Population estimates are based on 2018 census results. The estimated resident population of an area in New Zealand is an estimate of all people who usually live in that area at a given date. It includes all residents present in New Zealand and counted by the census, residents who are temporarily elsewhere in New Zealand and counted by the census, residents who are temporarily overseas (who are not included in the census), and an adjustment for residents missed or counted more than once by the census (net census undercount). Visitors from elsewhere in New Zealand and from overseas are excluded. Population estimates by SA1s are used as an input to derive population grids. These estimates are not official statistics. They’re derived as a customised dataset used to produce the experimental population grids. The population have been rounded to the nearest 10.

Business demography statistics

Business demography statistics provide an annual snapshot (as at February) of the structure and characteristics of New Zealand businesses. Statistics produced include counts of enterprises and geographic units by industry, geography such as region or statistical area 2 (SA2), institutional sector, business type, degree of overseas ownership, enterprise births, enterprise deaths, survival rate of enterprises and employment levels.

The series covers economically significant private-sector and public-sector enterprises that are engaged in the production of goods and services in New Zealand. These enterprises are maintained on the Statistics NZ Business Register (BR), which generally includes all employing units and those enterprises with GST turnover greater than $30,000 per year.

For further information: www.stats.govt.nz/information-releases/new-zealand...

Statistical geography

This dataset provides data for the SA2 geography (SA22020_V1_00). Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’. Data for earlier years is available in NZ.Stat– see Geographic units by industry and statistical area 2000-2020.

Geographic units

The geographic unit represents a business location engaged in one, or predominantly one, kind of economic activity at a single physical site or base (e.g. a factory, a farm, a shop, an office). Geographic units are unique to enterprises and an enterprise unit can have one or many geographic units (business locations). Typically, an enterprise unit only has a single geographic unit, unless the enterprise has paid employees who permanently work at more than one location. Geographic units can be transferred between enterprises (e.g. enterprise B purchases a factory (a geographic unit on the BR) as a going concern from enterprise A).

Employee count data

Employee counts (ECs) are sourced from the Inland Revenue employer monthly schedule (EMS) tax form.

Industry

The Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) 2006 is used to compile Business Demography statistics. The classification can be viewed and downloaded from Ariā.

ANZSIC 2006 divisions are:

A Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing

B Mining

C Manufacturing

D Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services

E Construction

F Wholesale Trade

G Retail Trade

H Accommodation and Food Services

I Transport, Postal and Warehousing

J Information Media and Telecommunications

K Financial and Insurance Services

L Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services

M Professional, Scientific and Technical Services

N Administrative and Support Services

O Public Administration and Safety

P Education and Training

Q Health Care and Social Assistance

R Arts and Recreation Services

S Other Services

Total Industry

Rounding

Enterprise, geographic unit, and EC counts are randomly rounded. Due to rounding, individual figures may not sum to the published totals.

Quality limitations of fine-level data, including SA2-level data

We recommend caution when using fine-level regional and industry business demography data. The Business Register (BR) supports quality national-level and aggregate industry-level statistics but is not designed to provide quality fine-level regional or industry statistics. The BR update sources can have timing lags and less robust information for small and medium-sized enterprises. These quality weaknesses can be highlighted in fine-level business demography statistics.

For more information about data quality and available data go to DataInfo+.
