The geographic areas file 2020 is a downloadable csv file that classifies meshblocks into larger geographic areas, such as statistical area 2s, territorial authorities, and regional councils. You can use the area files, which are also known as concordance files, to see how the various geographic boundaries link together.

For each meshblock, there is a series of codes that link to any meshblock-defined geographic area. All areas are set as at 1 January of the specified year. Concordance files are available from different years, to enable data for the same area classification to be compared over time.

The areas files can be used in conjunction with the geographic boundary files available on Stats NZ's Geographic Data Service.

From 2020 onwards, names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons, as applicable. Where a descriptor column has a macron, the corresponding column name without a macron is suffixed with ‘ascii’.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries concorded to higher geographies for 2020 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 29,895 SA1s including 16 with empty or null geometries (non-digitised SA1s).

This SA1 higher geographies 2020 file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates SA1s to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: regional council (REGC2020), statistical area 2 (SA22020), territorial authority (TA2020), urban rural (UR2020), and urban rural indicator (IUR2020). The following geographies were introduced in 2018: statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), urban rural (UR), and urban rural indicator (IUR) as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaced the 1992 New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92).

Higher geography names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons, as applicable. Column names for those without macrons are suffixed ‘ascii’. For further information on individual higher geographies, refer to each geography’s metadata.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset is the definitive version of annually released statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries concorded to higher geographies for 2020 as defined by Stats NZ. this version contains 2,255 categories.

This statistical area 2 higher geographies file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates SA2s to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: territorial authority (TA) and regional council (REGC). For more information on the individual higher geographies, refer to each geography’s metadata.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries for 2020 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 29,895 SA1 categories.

SA1s were introduced as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaced the New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). SA1 is a new output geography that allows the release of more detailed information about population characteristics than is available at the meshblock level.

Built by joining meshblocks, SA1s have an ideal size range of 100–200 residents, and a maximum population of about 500. This is to minimise suppression of population data in multivariate statistics tables. SA1s either define or aggregate to define SA2s, urban rural areas, territorial authorities, and regional councils. Some SA1s that contain apartment blocks, retirement villages, and large non-residential facilities have more than 500 residents.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

SA1 is a new output geography that allows the release of more detailed information about population characteristics than is available at the meshblock level.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released urban rural boundaries for 2020 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 721 urban rural categories.

The urban rural geography was introduced as part he Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaced the New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The urban rural geography replaces the (NZSAC92) urban area geography.

Urban rural is an output geography that classifies New Zealand into areas that share common urban or rural characteristics and is used to disseminate a broad range of Stats NZ’s social, demographic and economic statistics.

Update: Following the 2018 Census ten rural settlements were reclassified as small urban areas in the Urban Rural 2020 classification. These are: Haruru, Ngunguru, Waipu, Parakai, Patumahoe Village, Pauanui, Pirongia, Mapua, Clyde and Lake Hawea.

The urban rural indicator complements the urban rural geography and is an attribute in this dataset. Further information on the urban rural indicator is available on the Stats NZ classification and coding tool ARIA.

This dataset was first added to Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 27 Sep 2019.

This dataset contains occupied and unoccupied private dwelling counts from the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses, with percentage changes between the 2013 Census and 2018 Censuses, by statistical area 2.

These statistical area 2 boundaries extend to the 12 mile limit and are as at 1 January 2018, for further information see Statistical Area 2 2018 (generalised).

This data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Some counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules.

Note: The 2018 Census counted fewer dwellings in Marlborough Sounds East, Marlborough Sounds West, and Marlborough Sounds Coastal Marine than existed at census time. If you intend to use dwelling counts at this geography, please contact census.external.relations@stats.govt.nz for more information.
