This dataset is the definitive set of the annually released territorial authority subdivision boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. Subdivisions are set up under the Local Government Act 2002 and Local Electoral Act 2001. A subdivision is a division of a community or local board area for electoral purposes. Subdivisions are defined at meshblock level and nest within community or local boards.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. SA1 is an output geography that allows the release of more detailed information about population characteristics than is available at the meshblock level. SA1s are defined at meshblock level.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Statistical Area 2 2019 (Centroid True) is the true centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries for 2019.

The "true" centroid is the centre of mass of that polygon, such that if some flat substance of uniform thickness and density were cut into the shape of that polygon, then that object would balance at the centroid. The centroid is a useful way of summarizing the location of a set of polygons as points, particularly when used for comparative analysis.

Note that the centroid could potentially fall outside the SA2 polygon, depending on the shape of the polygon. The dataset contains the EASTING and NORTHING attributes of the centroid point in NZGD2000 New Zealand Transverse Mercator (EPSG:2193) and LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the centroid point in decimal degrees in WGS1984 (EPSG:4326) projection.

Statistical Area 2 2019 (Centroid Inside) is the inside centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries for 2019.

The "inside" centroid is a point which always falls inside each SA2 polygon as this is often desirable in some users cases. The placement of the point is typically in the widest part of the polygon. The algorithms used are proprietary to ESRI and are related to label placement.

Note that the "inside" centroid is NOT always the same as the centre of gravity ("true" centroid) of the polygon as in some situations the true centroid may fall outside the meshblock geometry. This dataset contains census usually resident population counts from the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses by statistical area 2. It contains counts by age groups for the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses, and percentage changes between the 2013 and 2018 Censuses.

The life cycle age groups are: under 15 years, 15 to 29 years, 30 to 64 years, and 65 years and over.

These statistical area 2 boundaries extend to the 12 mile limit and are as at 1 January 2018, for further information see Statistical Area 2 2018 (generalised).

This data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Some counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules. Values of ‘-999’ indicate suppressed data.

The geographic areas file 2020 is a downloadable csv file that classifies meshblocks into larger geographic areas, such as statistical area 2s, territorial authorities, and regional councils. You can use the area files, which are also known as concordance files, to see how the various geographic boundaries link together.

For each meshblock, there is a series of codes that link to any meshblock-defined geographic area. All areas are set as at 1 January of the specified year. Concordance files are available from different years, to enable data for the same area classification to be compared over time.

The areas files can be used in conjunction with the geographic boundary files available on Stats NZ's Geographic Data Service.

For earlier geographic area files refer to the Geographic area files on the Stats NZ website.

From 2020 onwards, names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons, as applicable. Where a descriptor column has a macron, the corresponding column name without a macron is suffixed with ‘ascii’.

The geographic areas file 2020 was released prior to the setting of the general electorate 2020 (GED2020) and Māori electorate 2020 (MED2020) boundaries and therefore does not contain these. This dataset is the definitive set of annually released meshblock boundaries at 1 January 2019. Stats NZ maintains an annual meshblock geography for collecting and producing statistical data. This allows data to be compared over time. A meshblock is the smallest geographic unit for which statistical data is collected and processed by Stats NZ. A meshblock is defined by a geographic area, which can vary in size from part of a city block to a large area of rural land. Each meshblock borders on another to form a network covering all of New Zealand, including coasts and inlets and extending out to the 200-mile economic zone. Meshblocks are added together to build up larger geographic areas such as statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), and urban rural. They are also used to define electoral districts, territorial authorities, and regional councils. The digital geographic boundaries are defined and maintained by Stats NZ. Meshblocks cover the land area of New Zealand, the water area to the 12-mile limit, the Chatham Islands, Kermadec Islands, sub-Antarctic islands, off-shore oil rigs, and Ross Dependency.
