This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 12 May 2020.

This page contains an areas file for 2019 geographic areas.

Area files are text files that classify meshblocks into larger geographic areas, such as statistical area 2s, territorial authorities, and regional councils. You can use the area files, which are also known as concordance files, to map the types of digital boundaries (see Examples of geographic boundary layers) within the geographic hierarchy, to see how the various geographic boundaries link together.

For each meshblock, there is a series of codes that link to any meshblock-defined geographic area. All areas are set as at 1 January of the specified year. Concordance files are available from different years, to enable data for the same area classification to be compared over time.

The areas files can be used in conjunction with the geographic boundary files available on Stats NZ's Geographic Data Service. For earlier files refer to Geographic area files.

Māori Electoral District 2002 is the definitive set of 2002 Māori electoral district boundaries as defined by the Representation Commission. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and Stats NZ are the custodians. These boundaries comprise the Māori electoral districts as constituted under the Electoral Act 1993. Māori electoral districts extend to the 12-mile limit and are defined at meshblock level. The number of Māori electoral districts, and Māori electoral populations for each electorate, are calculated using formula in the Electoral Act 1993. The Representation Commission is convened by the Surveyor-General every five years following a Census of Population and Dwellings, and Māori Electoral Option. Its role is to re-draw electoral boundaries to make sure each electorate has about the same number of people. When setting the boundaries, the Representation Commission also considers existing boundaries, community of interest (including iwi affiliations), the infrastructure that links communities (such as main roads), topographical features, and any projected variation in the population of those districts during their existence. Māori Electoral District is a flat classification with 7 categories These boundaries were used for the 2002 and 2005 New Zealand general elections.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries at 1 January 2018, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. SA1 is a new output geography that allows the release of more detailed information about population characteristics than is available at the meshblock level. SA1s are defined at meshblock level.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released regional council constituency boundaries for 2020 as defined by the regional councils and/or Local Government Commission and maintained by Stats NZ (the custodian). This version contains 64 categories.

Constituencies are established under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from the division of a region for electoral purposes. If a regional council decides to have a Māori constituency, the constituencies within the council are known as general constituencies and Māori constituencies.Constituencies are divisions of regional council areas.

Constituencies are defined at meshblock level, and do not coincide with the statistical area 1 (SA1) geography or the statistical area 2 (SA2) geography. They are created, based on population, to be the voting areas within councils.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The column name for those without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This dataset contains census usually resident population counts from the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses by regional council. It contains counts by age group for the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses, and percentage changes between the 2013 and 2018 Censuses.

The life-cycle age groups are: under 15 years, 15 to 29 years, 30 to 64 years, and 65 years and over.

These regional council boundaries extend to the 12 mile limit and are as at 1 January 2018, for further information see Regional Council 2018 (generalised).

This data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality, for further information see 2018 confidentiality rules.

Regional tourism organisation boundaries are meshblock based and were created by dissolving groupings of ward and territorial authority areas. This version or regional tourism organisation boundaries extends to the 12 mile limit. Regional tourism organisations are responsible for the promotion of their regions to prospective domestic and international visitors. This version has been developed with input from Regional Tourism New Zealand.

Note: Not all 37 categories representing regional tourism organisation areas are currently operating as regional tourism organisations at the time of publishing. Those areas not operating as regional tourism organisations are: Kawerau (06), Rangitikei (14), Tararua (16), Horowhenua (18) and Waimate (28).

Fiordland includes Fiordland National Park, Manapouri, Te Anau, and Te Anau Downs areas with the rest of the area assigned to Southland. Where a regional tourism organisation area boundary crossed a meshblock the meshblock was assigned to whichever regional tourism organisation area the majority of the meshblock fell within. The meshblocks crossed by regional tourism organisation areas boundaries are: 3174500 Fiordland 3175100 Fiordland 3173403 Southland 3172802 Southland 3172804 Southland 3172100 Fiordland 4004893 Fiordland 3191600 Fiordland 3191701 Fiordland 3192300 Southland 3192400 Southland 3193400 Fiordland.

This lookup table relates to the web service 2018 Census individual part 1 data by SA1.
The web service contains data from the 2018 Census only, no data from previous censuses has been included.

The individual (part 1) dataset is displayed by statistical area 1 geography and contains information on:
• Census usually resident population count
• Census night population count
• Unit record data source
• Sex
• Age in five-year groups, including median age
• Age in broad groups
• Age in five-year groups by sex, including median age
• Years at usual residence
• Usual residence five years ago (2013) indicator
• Usual residence one year ago (2017) indicator
• Birthplace
• Birthplace (broad geographic areas) excluding at SA1
• Years since arrival in New Zealand, for the overseas-born
• Ethnic group (grouped total responses)
• Six languages (total responses)
• Māori descent

The data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Some counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules. Values of ‘-999’ indicate suppressed data, values of ‘-998’ refer to data not available at SA1 (refer to Birthplace for lower geographic breakdowns), and values of ‘Null’ indicate data not collected.

For further information on this dataset please refer to the Statistical area 1 dataset for 2018 Census webpage - footnotes for individual part 1, Excel workbooks, and CSV files are available to download. Data quality ratings for 2018 Census variables, summarising the quality rating and priority levels for 2018 Census variables, are available.

For information on the statistical area 1 geography please refer to the Statistical standard for geographic areas 2018.
