This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 30 Jan 2020.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries concorded to higher geographies for 2020 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 29,895 SA1s including 16 with empty or null geometries (non-digitised SA1s).

This SA1 higher geographies 2020 file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates SA1s to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: regional council (REGC2020), statistical area 2 (SA22020), territorial authority (TA2020), urban rural (UR2020), and urban rural indicator (IUR2020). The following geographies were introduced in 2018: statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), urban rural (UR), and urban rural indicator (IUR) as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaced the 1992 New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92).

Higher geography names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons, as applicable. Column names for those without macrons are suffixed ‘ascii’. For further information on individual higher geographies, refer to each geography’s metadata.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This dataset is a derived version comprising local boards for Auckland and territorial authorities for the rest of New Zealand, as defined by the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission and maintained by Stats NZ(the custodian), clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and so does not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. This version contains 21 local boards in the Auckland Council and 66 territorial authority boundaries for the rest New Zealand.

For statistical outputs that use territorial authorities to aggregate and report data Auckland Council is treated as a single geographic entity. This can hide meaningful patterns and trends for a significant portion of the population. A solution was to create a new classification of territorial authorities that includes the local boards for Auckland. The Auckland Council was established in 2010 under the Local Government (Tamaki Makaurau Reorganisation) Act 2009. Seven territorial authorities within the Auckland Region were abolished and replaced by the unitary authority Auckland Council. Local boards fall within the community board classification.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

Regional tourism organisation boundaries are meshblock based and were created by dissolving groupings of ward and territorial authority areas. This version or regional tourism organisation boundaries extends to the 12 mile limit. Regional tourism organisations are responsible for the promotion of their regions to potential domestic and international visitors. This version has been developed with input from Regional Tourism New Zealand

Note: Not all 37 categories representing regional tourism organisation areas are currently operating as regional tourism organisations at the time of publishing. Those areas not operating as regional tourism organisations are: Kawerau (06), Rangitikei (14), Tararua (16), Horowhenua (18) and Waimate (28).

Fiordland includes Fiordland National Park, Manapouri, Te Anau, and Te Anau Downs areas with the rest of the area assigned to Southland. Where a regional tourism organisation area boundary crossed a meshblock the meshblock was assigned to whichever regional tourism organisation area the majority of the meshblock fell within. The meshblocks crossed by regional tourism organisation areas boundries are: 3174500 Fiordland 3175100 Fiordland 3173403 Southland 3172802 Southland 3172804 Southland 3172100 Fiordland 4004893 Fiordland 3191600 Fiordland 3191701 Fiordland 3192300 Southland 3192400 Southland 3193400 Fiordland.

This dataset contains the annually released Māori ward boundaries for 2020 as defined by the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission but maintained by Stats NZ (the custodian), clipped to coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and so does not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. This version contains 68 categories.

The Local Electoral Act 2001 provides that Māori wards may be established in territorial authorities. The statutory provisions for establishing Māori wards are set out in sections 19Z to 19ZH of the Local Electoral Act 2001. The first Māori ward was established by representation review in 2019 and appears in the 2020 geographic boundaries released by Stats NZ. The first Māori ward to be created is Wairoa Māori ward (02901) in the Wairoa District. Māori ward boundaries are defined at meshblock level.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This dataset contains the inside centroid point layer for the annually released meshblock boundaries as at 1 January 2020.The "inside" centroid is a point which always falls inside each meshblock polygon as this is often desirable. The placement of the point is typically in the widest part of the polygon. The algorithms used are proprietary to ESRI and are related to label placement. Note that the "inside" centroid is NOT always the same as the center of gravity ("true" centroid) of the polygon as in some situations the true centroid may fall outside the meshblock polygon. The dataset contains the EASTING and NORTHING attributes of the centroid point in NZGD2000 New Zealand Transverse Mercator (EPSG:2193) and LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the centroid point in decimal degrees in WGS1984 (EPSG:4326) projection. Non-digitised meshblocks cannot have a centroid.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released regional council Māori constituency boundaries for 2020 as defined by the regional councils and/or Local Government Commission, and maintained by Stats NZ (the custodian). This version contains 20 categories.

This version contains 5 Māori constituencies, excluding area outside constituency. Māori constituencies are established under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from the division of a region for electoral purposes. Māori constituencies are divisions of regional council areas. They are created, based on population, to be the voting areas within councils. Māori constituencies are defined at meshblock level. If a regional council decides to have a Māori constituency, the constituencies within the council are known as general constituencies and Māori constituencies.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The column name for those without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

General Electoral District 2007 is the definitive set of 2007 general electoral district boundaries as defined by the Representation Commission. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and Stats NZ are the custodians. These boundaries comprise the general electoral districts as constituted under the Electoral Act 1993. General electoral districts extend to the 12-mile limit and are defined at meshblock level. The number of general electoral districts, and electoral populations for each electorate, are calculated using formula in the Electoral Act 1993. The Representation Commission is convened by the Surveyor-General every five years following a Census of Population and Dwellings, and Māori Electoral Option. Its role is to re-draw electoral boundaries to make sure each electorate has about the same number of people. When setting the boundaries, the Representation Commission also considers existing boundaries, community of interest, the infrastructure that links communities (such as main roads), topographical features, and any projected variation in the population of those districts during their existence. General Electoral District is a flat classification with 63 categories. These boundaries were used for the 2008 and 2011 New Zealand general elections.

This layer has been generalised, i.e. simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.
