This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 01 Nov 2018.

This dataset is a major released version of the annually released meshblock boundaries concorded to higher geographies at 1 January 2018 as defined by Stats NZ. This Meshblock Higher Geographies 2018 file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates meshblocks to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: community board (CB2018), constituency (CON2018), Māori constituency (MCON2018), regional council (REGC2018), statistical area 1 (SA12018), statistical area 2 (SA22018), subdivision (TASUB2018), territorial authority (TA2018), urban rural (UR2018), urban rural indicator (IUR2018), and ward (WARD2018). The following geographies were first introduced in 2018: statistical area 1 (SA12018), statistical area 2 (SA22018), urban rural (UR2018), and urban rural indicator (IUR2018). These new geographies are part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaces the 1992 New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The statistical standard for geographic areas is to be used from 2018 (SSGA18). It defines the Stats NZ input and output geographic classifications and describes their primary purposes, and sets out requirements and guidelines for the creation and maintenance of statistical geographies.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Please note that a review of SA2 names was undertaken in early 2018. The review addressed issues with inconsistent naming and applied corrections, resulting in an update to this dataset applied in November 2018. All SA2 codes are unchanged.

For further information on individual higher geographies, refer to their metadata.

Statistical Area 2 2018 (Centroid Inside) is the inside centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries for 2018.
The "inside" centroid is a point which always falls inside each SA2 polygon as this is often desirable in some users cases. The placement of the point is typically in the widest part of the polygon. The algorithms used are proprietary to ESRI and are related to label placement. Note that the "inside" centroid is NOT always the same as the center of gravity ("true" centroid) of the polygon as in some situations the true centroid may fall outside the Meshblock geometry. The dataset contains the EASTING and NORTHING attributes of the centroid point in NZGD2000 New Zealand Transverse Mercator (EPSG:2193) and LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the centroid point in decimal degrees in WGS1984 (EPSG:4326) projection.

Please note that a review of SA2 names was undertaken in early 2018. The review addressed issues with inconsistent naming and applied corrections, resulting in an update to this dataset applied in May 2018. All SA2 codes are unchanged.

This dataset was first added to Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 06 Dec 2020.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released territorial authority boundaries for 2021 as defined the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission and maintained by Stats NZ (the custodian). This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and so does not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. This version contains 68 categories.

A territorial authority is defined under the Local Government Act 2002 as a city or a district council. There are 67 territorial authorities in New Zealand. Some territorial authority boundaries are coterminous with regional council boundaries but there are several exceptions. An example is Taupo District, which is split between four regions, although most of its area falls within the Waikato Region. Territorial authorities are defined at meshblock, statistical area 1 (SA1) and statistical area 2 (SA2) levels.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This dataset is the definitive set of statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries at 1 January 2018, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. This dataset is the definitive set of annually released ward boundaries for 2021 as defined by the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission, and maintained by Stats NZ (the custodian). This version contains 239 categories.

Wards were originally set up within any territorial authority with a population of at least 20,000. Wards are defined under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from dividing a territorial authority for electoral purposes. The ward system was designed to allow for the recognition of communities within a territorial authority and to increase community involvement in the local government system.Territorial authorities can now choose whether they would like to maintain electoral wards. As a result, the number of wards has steadily decreased since they were first created in 1989. Ward boundaries are reviewed in the year before the three-yearly local government elections.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released urban rural boundaries for 2022, as defined by Stats NZ (the custodian), clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and so does not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. This version contains 668 urban rural features.

The urban rural geography was introduced as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaced the New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The urban rural geography replaces the (NZSAC92) urban area geography. Urban rural is an output geography that classifies New Zealand into areas that share common urban or rural characteristics and is used to disseminate a broad range of Stats NZ’s social, demographic and economic statistics.

The urban rural indicator complements the urban rural geography and is an attribute in this dataset. Further information on the urban rural indicator is available on the Stats NZ classification and coding tool ARIA.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This dataset was first added to Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 01 Dec 2021.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries for 2022, as defined by Stats NZ (the custodian), clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and so does not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. This version contains 29,698 SA1 features.

SA1s were introduced as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaced the New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). SA1 is an output geography that allows the release of more detailed information about population characteristics than is available at the meshblock level.

Built by joining meshblocks, SA1s have an ideal size range of 100–200 residents, and a maximum population of about 500. This is to minimise suppression of population data in multivariate statistics tables. SA1s either define or aggregate to define SA2s, urban rural areas, territorial authorities, and regional councils. Some SA1s that contain apartment blocks, retirement villages, and large non-residential facilities have more than 500 residents.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

The SA1 classification can also be downloaded from the Stats NZ classification and concordance tool Ariā.

The geographic areas file 2022 is a text file that classifies meshblocks into larger geographic areas, such as statistical area 2s, territorial authorities, and regional councils. You can use the areas file, also known as a concordance file, to see how the various geographic boundaries are related.

For each meshblock, there is a series of codes that link to any meshblock-defined geographic area. All areas are set as at 1 January of the specified year. Concordance files are available from different years, to enable data for the same area classification to be compared over time.

The areas file can be used in conjunction with the geographic boundary files available on Stats NZ's Geographic Data Service.

Geographic areas files for earlier years are also available on Stats NZ’s Geographic Data Service.

From 2020 onwards, names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons, as applicable. Where a descriptor column has a macron, the corresponding column name without a macron is suffixed with ‘ascii’.
