This dataset is the definitive set of local board boundaries for Auckland and territorial authority boundaries for the rest of New Zealand for 2018 as defined by Statistics New Zealand, as at 1 January 2018. This version contains 21 local boards in the Auckland Council.

Local boards fall within the community board classification.Local boards were introduced as part of the new local government arrangements for Auckland in 2010. Local boards share governance with a council’s governing body and each has complementary responsibilities, guaranteed by legislation. Local boards can propose bylaws and they gather community views on local and regional matters. Local legislation enacted in 2012 allows for the establishment of local boards in areas of new unitary authorities that are predominantly urban and have a population of more than 400,000. The boundaries of local boards cannot be abolished or changed except through a reorganisation process.

This household dataset is displayed by statistical area 1 geography and contains information on:

• Total households

• Tenure of household

• Sector of landlord

• Weekly rent paid by household, including median weekly rent paid by household

• Number of motor vehicles

• Access to telecommunication systems (total responses)

This dataset contains counts at statistical area 1 for selected variables from the 2018, 2013, and 2006 censuses. The geography corresponds to 2018 boundaries.

The data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Some counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules. Values of ‘-999’ indicate suppressed data, and values of ‘-997’ indicate data not collected.

For further information on this dataset please refer to the Statistical area 1 dataset for 2018 Census webpage - footnotes for household, Excel workbooks, and CSV files are available to download. Data quality ratings for 2018 Census variables, summarising the quality rating and priority levels for 2018 Census variables, are available.

For information on the statistical area 1 geography please refer to the Statistical standard for geographic areas 2018.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries at 1 January 2018, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. SA1 is a new output geography that allows the release of more detailed information about population characteristics than is available at the meshblock level. SA1s are defined at meshblock level.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released urban rural boundaries for 2022 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 722 urban rural features.

The urban rural geography was introduced as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaced the New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The urban rural geography replaces the (NZSAC92) urban area geography.

Urban rural is an output geography that classifies New Zealand into areas that share common urban or rural characteristics and is used to disseminate a broad range of Stats NZ’s social, demographic, and economic statistics.

The urban rural indicator complements the urban rural geography and is an attribute in this dataset. Further information on the urban rural indicator is available on the Stats NZ classification and coding tool ARIA.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This is the definitive set of area unit boundaries for 2013 as defined by Statistics New Zealand as at 1 January 2015.
Area units are aggregations of adjacent meshblocks with coterminous boundaries to form a single unbroken surface area (land and/or water). Exceptions to this rule are some area units comprising collections of geographically related inlets and marinas.
In an urban location, an area unit is often a collection of city blocks, while in rural situations area units may be equated to localities or communities. Area units must either define or aggregate to define urban areas, rural centres, statistical areas, territorial authorities, and regional councils.
Each area unit must be a single geographic entity with a unique name. The area unit pattern is revised once every five years in the year immediately before a Census of Population and Dwellings. There may also be changes in other years, in conjunction with local body boundary changes. Statistics New Zealand maintains a concordance file to ensure boundaries relating to earlier area unit patterns can also be generated.

This dataset contains sex by ethnic group (grouped total responses), for the census usually resident population count, 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses for urban rural areas.

The dataset uses geographic boundaries as at 1 January 2018. For explanation of the urban rural classification see Statistical standard for geographic areas 2018.

Definitions

The census usually resident population count (CURP) of an area (subnational count) is a count of all people who usually live in that area and were present in New Zealand on census night. It excludes visitors from overseas, visitors from elsewhere in New Zealand, and residents temporarily overseas on census night. For example, a person who usually lives in Christchurch city and is visiting Wellington city on census night will be included in the census usually resident population count of Christchurch city. The CURP variable is rated as high quality.

Ethnic group includes all people who stated each ethnic group, whether as their only ethnic group or as one of several ethnic groups. Where a person reported more than one ethnic group, they have been counted in each applicable group. The Ethnicity variable is rated as high quality.

Quality

For information on quality ratings by variable, please see Data quality ratings for 2018 census variables.

Due to changes in the 2018 Census methodology and lower than anticipated response rates, time series data should be interpreted with care.

Confidentiality

The 2018 Census confidentiality rules have been applied to 2006, 2013, and 2018 data. These rules protect the confidentiality of individuals, families, households, dwellings, and undertakings in 2018 Census data.

Counts are calculated using Fixed Random Rounding to base 3 (FRR3), and suppression of ‘sensitive’ counts less than six, where tables report multiple geographic variables and/or small populations. Individual figures may not always sum to stated totals.

For more information on the most recent 2018 Census confidentiality rules see Applying confidentiality rules to 2018 Census data and summary of changes since 2013

This is the definitive set of regional council boundaries for 2013 as defined by the Local Government Commission and/or regional councils themselves but maintained by Statistics New Zealand (the custodian) as at 1 January 2013.
The regional council is the top tier of local government in New Zealand. There are 16 regional councils in New Zealand (defined by Part 1 of Schedule 2 of the Local Government Act 2002). Eleven are governed by an elected regional council, while five are governed by territorial authorities (the second tier of local government) who also perform the functions of a regional council and are known as unitary authorities. These unitary authorities are Auckland Council, Nelson City Council, and Gisborne, Tasman, and Marlborough District Councils. The Chatham Islands Council also performs some of the functions of a regional council, but is not strictly a unitary authority. Unitary authorities act as regional councils for the purposes of a wide range of legislative purposes. Regional councils are responsible for the administration of many environmental and transport matters such as land transport planning and harbour navigation and safety.
Regional Councils were established in 1989 after the abolition of the 22 local government regions. The Local Government Act 2002 requires the boundaries of regions to conform, as far as possible, to one or more water catchments. When determining regional boundaries, the Local Government Commission gave consideration to regional communities of interest when selecting which water catchments to include in a region. It also considered factors such as natural resource management, land use planning and environmental matters. Some regional council boundaries are coterminous with territorial authority boundaries but there are several exceptions. An example is Taupo District, which is geographically split between four regions, although most of its area falls within the Waikato Region. Where territorial local authorities straddle regional council boundaries, the affected area is statistically defined by complete area units. In general, however, regional councils contain complete territorial authorities.
The unitary authority of the Auckland Council was formed in 2010, under the Local Government (Tamaki Makarau Reorganisation) Act 2009, replacing the Auckland Regional Council and seven territorial authorities. The seaward boundary of any coastal regional council is the twelve mile New Zealand territorial limit.
