This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 17 May 2018.

This dataset is the definitive set of statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries at 1 January 2018 as defined by Stats NZ. SA2 is a new output geography that provides higher aggregations of population data than can be provided at the statistical area 1 (SA1) level. SA2s are defined at SA1 and meshblock levels. Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes. For further information see ANZLIC Metadata 2018 Statistical Area 2 attachment below or link to the StatsNZ Classification System Aria.

Please note that a review of SA2 names was undertaken in early 2018. The review addressed issues with inconsistent naming and applied corrections, resulting in an update to this dataset applied in May 2018. All SA2 codes are unchanged.

This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 25 Jun 2020.

This dataset is the definitive set of statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries for 2020 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 2,255 SA2 categories.

SA2s were introduced as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA2018) which replaced the New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC1992). The SA2 geography replaces the (NZSAC1992) area unit geography.

SA2 is an output geography that provides higher aggregations of population data than can be provided at the statistical area 1 (SA1) level. The SA2 geography aims to reflect communities that interact together socially and economically. In populated areas, SA2s generally contain similar sized populations.

SA2s are built from SA1s and either define or aggregate to define urban rural areas, territorial authorities, and regional councils. SA2s in city council areas generally have a population of 2,000–4,000 residents while SA2s in district council areas generally have a population of 1,000–3,000 residents. In rural areas, many SA2s have fewer than 1,000 residents because they are in conservation areas or contain sparse populations that cover a large area.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This individual (part 1) dataset is displayed by statistical area 1 geography and contains information on:

• Census usually resident population count

• Census night population count

• Unit record data source

• Sex

• Age in five-year groups, including median age

• Age in broad groups

• Age in five-year groups by sex, including median age

• Years at usual residence

• Usual residence five years ago (2013) indicator

• Usual residence one year ago (2017) indicator

• Birthplace

• Birthplace (broad geographic areas) excluding at SA1

• Years since arrival in New Zealand, for the overseas-born

• Ethnic group (grouped total responses)

• Six languages (total responses)

• Māori descent

This dataset contains counts at statistical area 1 for selected variables from the 2018, 2013, and 2006 censuses. The geography corresponds to 2018 boundaries.

The data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Some counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules. Values of ‘-999’ indicate suppressed data, values of ‘-998’ refer to data not available at SA1 (refer to Birthplace for lower geographic breakdowns).

For further information on this dataset please refer to the Statistical area 1 dataset for 2018 Census webpage - footnotes for individual part 1, Excel workbooks, and CSV files are available to download. Data quality ratings for 2018 Census variables, summarising the quality rating and priority levels for 2018 Census variables, are available.

For information on the statistical area 1 geography please refer to the Statistical standard for geographic areas 2018.

This dataset was first added to Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 01 Dec 2017.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released meshblock boundaries at 1 January 2018. Stats NZ maintains an annual meshblock geography for collecting and producing statistical data. This allows data to be compared over time. A meshblock is the smallest geographic unit for which statistical data is collected and processed by Stats NZ. A meshblock is defined by a geographic area, which can vary in size from part of a city block to a large area of rural land. Each meshblock borders on another to form a network covering all of New Zealand, including coasts and inlets and extending out to the 200-mile economic zone. Meshblocks are added together to build up larger geographic areas such as statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), and urban rural. They are also used to define electoral districts, territorial authorities, and regional councils. The digital geographic boundaries are defined and maintained by Stats NZ. Meshblocks cover the land area of New Zealand, the water area to the 12-mile limit, the Chatham Islands, Kermadec Islands, sub-Antarctic islands, off-shore oil rigs, and Ross Dependency.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

There are 16 meshblocks not held in digitised form.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released territorial authority boundaries for 2020 as defined the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission and maintained by Stats NZ (the custodian). This version contains 68 categories.

A territorial authority is defined under the Local Government Act 2002 as a city or a district council. There are 67 territorial authorities in New Zealand. Some territorial authority boundaries are coterminous with regional council boundaries but there are several exceptions. An example is Taupo District, which is split between four regions, although most of its area falls within the Waikato Region. Territorial authorities are defined at meshblock, statistical area 1 (SA1) and statistical area 2 (SA2) levels.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This dataset is the definitive version of the annually released regional council boundaries for 2020 as defined by the regional councils and/or Local Government Commission, and maintained by Stats NZ (the custodian). This version contains 17 categories.

The regional council is the top tier of local government in New Zealand. There are 16 regional councils in New Zealand (defined by Part 1 of Schedule 2 of the Local Government Act 2002). Eleven are governed by an elected regional council, while five are governed by territorial authorities (the second tier of local government), who also perform the functions of a regional council and are known as unitary authorities.

Auckland Council unitary authority was formed in 2010, under the Local Government (Tamaki Makarau Reorganisation) Act 2009, replacing the Auckland Regional Council and seven territorial authorities. The seaward boundary of any coastal regional council is the twelve-mile New Zealand territorial limit. Regional councils are defined at meshblock and statistical area 2

This is the definitive set of area unit boundaries for 2013 as defined by Statistics New Zealand as at 1 January 2013.
Area units are aggregations of adjacent meshblocks with coterminous boundaries to form a single unbroken surface area (land and/or water). Exceptions to this rule are some area units comprising collections of geographically related inlets and marinas.
In an urban location, an area unit is often a collection of city blocks, while in rural situations area units may be equated to localities or communities. Area units must either define or aggregate to define urban areas, rural centres, statistical areas, territorial authorities, and regional councils.
Each area unit must be a single geographic entity with a unique name. The area unit pattern is revised once every five years in the year immediately before a Census of Population and Dwellings. There may also be changes in other years, in conjunction with local body boundary changes. Statistics New Zealand maintains a concordance file to ensure boundaries relating to earlier area unit patterns can also be generated.
