This dataset is the definitive set of urban area boundaries for 2017 as defined by Statistics New Zealand.

Urban areas are statistically defined areas with no administrative or legal basis. Urban area populations are defined internationally as towns with populations of 1,000 or more. The urban area classification is designed to identify concentrated urban or semi-urban settlements without the distortions of administrative boundaries. Urban areas are made up of complete meshblocks and area units. Rural centres are also defined in the urban area field.

This dataset contains the true centroid point layer for the annually released meshblock boundaries for 2022 as defined by Stats NZ (the custodian). The "true" centroid is the centre of mass of that polygon, such that if some flat substance of uniform thickness and density were cut into the shape of that polygon, then that object would balance at the centroid.

The centroid is a useful way of summarizing the locations of a set of polygons as points, particularly when used for comparative analysis. Note that the centroid could potentially fall outside the meshblock polygon, depending on the shape of the polygon.

The dataset contains the EASTING and NORTHING attributes of the centroid point in NZGD2000 New Zealand Transverse Mercator (EPSG:2193) and LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the centroid point in decimal degrees in WGS1984 (EPSG:4326) projection. Non-digitised meshblocks cannot have a centroid.

This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 13 Jan 2021.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries concorded to higher geographies for 2021 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 29,910 SA1s including 16 with empty or null geometries (non-digitised SA1s).

This SA1 higher geographies 2021 file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates SA1s to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: regional council (REGC2021), statistical area 2 (SA22021), territorial authority (TA2021), urban rural (UR2021), urban rural indicator (IUR2021), and urban accessibility indicator (IUA2021). The following geographies were introduced in 2018: statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), urban rural (UR), and urban rural indicator (IUR) as part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaced the 1992 New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The urban accessibility indicator (IUA), which measures the degree of urban influence New Zealand's urban areas have on surrounding rural areas, was first added to this correspondence in 2021.

Higher geography names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons, as applicable. Column names for those without macrons are suffixed ‘ascii’. For further information on individual higher geographies, refer to each geography’s metadata.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

This dataset contains occupied and unoccupied private dwelling counts from the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses, with percentage changes between the 2013 and 2018 Censuses, by regional council.

These regional council boundaries extend to the 12 mile limit and are as at 1 January 2018, for further information see Regional Council 2018 (generalised).

This data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality, for further information see 2018 confidentiality rules.

Note: the 2018 Census counted fewer dwellings in the Marlborough region than existed at census time. This was mainly in the Marlborough Sounds. If you intend to use dwelling counts at this geography, please contact censusrequests@stats.govt.nz for more information.

This dataset is the definitive set of ward boundaries at 1 January 2017 as defined by the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission, but maintained by Statistics New Zealand (the custodian).

Wards were originally set up within any territorial authority with a population of at least 20,000. Wards are defined under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from dividing a territorial authority for electoral purposes. The ward system was designed to allow for the recognition of communities within a territorial authority and to increase community involvement in the local government system.

This dataset is the definitive set of the annually released regional council boundaries for 2022 as defined by the regional councils and/or Local Government Commission and maintained by Stats NZ (the custodian), clipped to coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and so does not fully represent the official full extent boundaries.

The regional council is the top tier of local government in New Zealand. There are 16 regional councils in New Zealand (defined by Part 1 of Schedule 2 of the Local Government Act 2002). Eleven are governed by an elected regional council, while five are governed by territorial authorities (the second tier of local government), who also perform the functions of a regional council and are known as unitary authorities.

These unitary authorities are Auckland Council, Nelson City Council, and Gisborne, Tasman, and Marlborough District Councils. The Chatham Islands Council also performs some of the functions of a regional council but is not strictly a unitary authority. Unitary authorities act as regional councils for legislative purposes.

The seaward boundary of any coastal regional council is the twelve-mile New Zealand territorial limit. Regional councils are defined at meshblock level. Statistical area 1 and statistical area 2 geographies nest within regional council boundaries.

Names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons. The name field without macrons is suffixed ‘ascii’.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.
