This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 05 May 2019.

This dataset is the definitive set of urban rural boundaries at 1 January 2019 as defined by Stats NZ. Urban rural is a new output geography that classifies New Zealand into areas that share common urban or rural characteristics. Urban areas are built from the Statistical Area 2 geography, while rural and water areas are built from the Statistical Area 1 geography. Urban areas are statistically defined areas with no administrative or legal basis. The urban rural indicator is an attribute of this classification and provides additional information about a location's urban or rural nature.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset is the definitive set of ward boundaries 1 January 2019 as defined by the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission, and maintained by Stats NZ. Wards are defined under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and result from dividing a territorial authority for electoral purposes. Wards are defined at meshblock level.

This dataset is the definitive set of statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. SA2 is a new output geography that provides higher aggregations of population data than can be provided at the statistical area 1 (SA1) level. SA2s are defined at meshblock and SA1 levels.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset was first added to Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 03 Dec 2018.

This dataset is a high definition (HD) version of the annually released meshblock boundaries concorded to higher geographies as at 1 January 2018 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 53,596 meshblocks, including 16 with empty or null geometries (non-digitised meshblocks).

This Meshblock Higher Geographies 2019 file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates meshblocks to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. This HD version is the most detailed geometry, suitable for use in GIS for geometric analysis operations and for the computation of areas, centroids and other metrics. The HD version is aligned to the LINZ cadastre.

The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: community board (CB2019), constituency (CON2019), Māori constituency (MCON2019), regional council (REGC2019), statistical area 1 (SA12019), statistical area 2 (SA22019), subdivision (TASUB2019), territorial authority (TA2019), urban rural (UR2019), urban rural indicator (IUR2019), and ward (WARD2019). The following geographies were first introduced in 2018: statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), urban rural (UR), and urban rural indicator (IUR). These new geographies are part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaces the 1992 New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The statistical standard for geographic areas is to be used from 2018(SSGA18). It defines the Stats NZ input and output geographic classifications and describes their primary purposes, and sets out requirements and guidelines for the creation and maintenance of statistical geographies.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

For further information on individual higher geographies, refer to their metadata.

Statistical Area 2 2019 (Centroid True) is the true centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries for 2019.

The "true" centroid is the centre of mass of that polygon, such that if some flat substance of uniform thickness and density were cut into the shape of that polygon, then that object would balance at the centroid. The centroid is a useful way of summarizing the location of a set of polygons as points, particularly when used for comparative analysis.

Note that the centroid could potentially fall outside the SA2 polygon, depending on the shape of the polygon. The dataset contains the EASTING and NORTHING attributes of the centroid point in NZGD2000 New Zealand Transverse Mercator (EPSG:2193) and LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the centroid point in decimal degrees in WGS1984 (EPSG:4326) projection.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. Statistical Area 2 2019 (Centroid Inside) is the inside centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries for 2019.

The "inside" centroid is a point which always falls inside each SA2 polygon as this is often desirable in some users cases. The placement of the point is typically in the widest part of the polygon. The algorithms used are proprietary to ESRI and are related to label placement.

Note that the "inside" centroid is NOT always the same as the centre of gravity ("true" centroid) of the polygon as in some situations the true centroid may fall outside the meshblock geometry.
