Statistical Area 2 2018 (Centroid Inside) is the inside centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released statistical area 2 (SA2) boundaries for 2018.
The "inside" centroid is a point which always falls inside each SA2 polygon as this is often desirable in some users cases. The placement of the point is typically in the widest part of the polygon. The algorithms used are proprietary to ESRI and are related to label placement. Note that the "inside" centroid is NOT always the same as the center of gravity ("true" centroid) of the polygon as in some situations the true centroid may fall outside the Meshblock geometry. The dataset contains the EASTING and NORTHING attributes of the centroid point in NZGD2000 New Zealand Transverse Mercator (EPSG:2193) and LATITUDE and LONGITUDE of the centroid point in decimal degrees in WGS1984 (EPSG:4326) projection.

Please note that a review of SA2 names was undertaken in early 2018. The review addressed issues with inconsistent naming and applied corrections, resulting in an update to this dataset applied in May 2018. All SA2 codes are unchanged.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released territorial authority boundaries at 1 January 2019 as defined by the territorial authorities and/or Local Government Commission, and maintained by Stats NZ. A territorial authority is defined under the Local Government Act 2002 as a city or a district council. Territorial authorities are the second tier of local government in New Zealand, below regional councils.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

For further information see ANZLIC Metadata 2019 Territorial Authority attachment below.

This dataset is a high definition (HD) version of the annually released meshblock boundaries at 1 January 2018. This HD version is the most detailed geometry, suitable for use in GIS for geometric analysis operations and for the computation of areas, centroids and other metrics. The HD version is aligned to the LINZ cadastre. Stats NZ maintains an annual meshblock geography for collecting and producing statistical data. This allows data to be compared over time. A meshblock is the smallest geographic unit for which statistical data is collected and processed by Stats NZ. A meshblock is defined by a geographic area, which can vary in size from part of a city block to a large area of rural land. Each meshblock borders on another to form a network covering all of New Zealand, including coasts and inlets and extending out to the 200-mile economic zone. Meshblocks are added together to build up larger geographic areas such as statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), and urban rural. They are also used to define electoral districts, territorial authorities, and regional councils. The digital geographic boundaries are defined and maintained by Stats NZ. Meshblocks cover the land area of New Zealand, the water area to the 12-mile limit, the Chatham Islands, Kermadec Islands, sub-Antarctic islands, off-shore oil rigs, and Ross Dependency.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

There are 16 meshblocks not held in digitised form.

This individual (part 1) dataset is displayed by statistical area 1 geography and contains information on:

• Census usually resident population count

• Census night population count

• Unit record data source

• Sex

• Age in five-year groups, including median age

• Age in broad groups

• Age in five-year groups by sex, including median age

• Years at usual residence

• Usual residence five years ago (2013) indicator

• Usual residence one year ago (2017) indicator

• Birthplace

• Birthplace (broad geographic areas) excluding at SA1

• Years since arrival in New Zealand, for the overseas-born

• Ethnic group (grouped total responses)

• Six languages (total responses)

• Māori descent

This dataset contains counts at statistical area 1 for selected variables from the 2018, 2013, and 2006 censuses. The geography corresponds to 2018 boundaries.

The data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Some counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules. Values of ‘-999’ indicate suppressed data, values of ‘-998’ refer to data not available at SA1 (refer to Birthplace for lower geographic breakdowns).

For further information on this dataset please refer to the Statistical area 1 dataset for 2018 Census webpage - footnotes for individual part 1, Excel workbooks, and CSV files are available to download. Data quality ratings for 2018 Census variables, summarising the quality rating and priority levels for 2018 Census variables, are available.

For information on the statistical area 1 geography please refer to the Statistical standard for geographic areas 2018.

This dataset contains census usually resident population counts from the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses by statistical area 2. It contains counts by age groups for the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses, and percentage changes between the 2013 and 2018 Censuses.

The life cycle age groups are: under 15 years, 15 to 29 years, 30 to 64 years, and 65 years and over.

These statistical area 2 boundaries extend to the 12 mile limit and are as at 1 January 2018, for further information see Statistical Area 2 2018 (generalised).

This data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Some counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules. Values of ‘-999’ indicate suppressed data.

MB2018_V1_00_Centroid_True is the true centroid point layer for the major released version of the annually released meshblock boundaries for 2018. The "true" centroid is the centre of mass of that polygon, such that if some flat substance of uniform thickness and density were cut into the shape of that polygon, then that object would balance at the centroid. The centroid is a useful way of summarizing the locations of a set of polygons as points, particularly when used for comparative analysis. Note that the centroid could potentially fall outside the meshblock polygon, depending on the shape of the polygon. Non-digitised meshblocks cannot have a centroid.

This dataset contains counts of people of Maori descent by the official language indicator from the 2013 Census. The data is presented at meshblock level and uses the 2013 Census boundaries. The variables provided are as follows:

  • Number of Maori Descent who speak te reo Maori
  • Number of Maori Descent who do not speak te reo Maori (includes no language)

This dataset allows for the comparison across areas to determine the strength or otherwise of te reo Maori language for people of Maori descent.

Notes:
Confidentiality rules have been applied to all cells in this table, including randomly rounding to base 3.
Unrounded counts of less than 6 have been confidentialised.
Individual figures may not add up to totals, and values for the same data may vary in different tables.
-999 indicates cells have been suppressed for confidentiality reasons
