This dataset contains counts of people of Maori descent by the official language indicator from the 2013 Census. The data is presented at meshblock level and uses the 2013 Census boundaries. The variables provided are as follows:

  • Number of Maori Descent who speak te reo Maori
  • Number of Maori Descent who do not speak te reo Maori (includes no language)

This dataset allows for the comparison across areas to determine the strength or otherwise of te reo Maori language for people of Maori descent.

Notes:
Confidentiality rules have been applied to all cells in this table, including randomly rounding to base 3.
Unrounded counts of less than 6 have been confidentialised.
Individual figures may not add up to totals, and values for the same data may vary in different tables.
-999 indicates cells have been suppressed for confidentiality reasons

General Electoral District 2002 is the definitive set of 2002 general electoral district boundaries as defined by the Representation Commission. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and Stats NZ are the custodians. These boundaries comprise the general electoral districts as constituted under the Electoral Act 1993. General electoral districts extend to the 12-mile limit and are defined at meshblock level. The number of general electoral districts, and electoral populations for each electorate, are calculated using formula in the Electoral Act 1993. The Representation Commission is convened by the Surveyor-General every five years following a Census of Population and Dwellings, and Māori Electoral Option. Its role is to re-draw electoral boundaries to make sure each electorate has about the same number of people. When setting the boundaries, the Representation Commission also considers existing boundaries, community of interest, the infrastructure that links communities (such as main roads), topographical features, and any projected variation in the population of those districts during their existence. General Electoral District is a flat classification with 62 categories. These boundaries were used for the 2002 and 2005 New Zealand general elections.

This layer has been generalised, i.e. simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

These meshblocks are used as a basis to build the electoral population for each proposed electorate. The electoral populations are calculated using the formula specified in the Electoral Act 1993 and are confidentialised using Stats NZ confidentiality rules. The rules applied to the electoral populations are suppression of all unrounded counts below six (displayed as: ‘-999’) and random rounding to base three. Since the electoral populations of each meshblock are randomly rounded, the count for each meshblock could be different to the raw total by up to two when compared with the total electoral population for meshblocks from another source. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and Stats NZ are the data custodians.

Data is provided with tohutō/macrons (UTF-8 format). To support users with the compatibility of the data and the applications they might be using, additional fields are also provided in ASCII format.

Meshblocks, which aggregate to form electorates, are updated annually by Stats NZ. Since the 2013/14 boundary review, a number of meshblock boundaries that coincide with electorate boundaries have been adjusted to a better position i.e. to follow the correct line of a river or road. These minor adjustments do not affect any populations. The adjustments are visible in a small number of land and coastal areas where the current and proposed boundaries do not exactly align. The Representation Commission will be asked to approve these minor adjustments when they fix the boundaries in 2020.
