This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 01 Nov 2018.

This dataset is a major released version of the annually released meshblock boundaries concorded to higher geographies at 1 January 2018 as defined by Stats NZ. This Meshblock Higher Geographies 2018 file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates meshblocks to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: community board (CB2018), constituency (CON2018), Māori constituency (MCON2018), regional council (REGC2018), statistical area 1 (SA12018), statistical area 2 (SA22018), subdivision (TASUB2018), territorial authority (TA2018), urban rural (UR2018), urban rural indicator (IUR2018), and ward (WARD2018). The following geographies were first introduced in 2018: statistical area 1 (SA12018), statistical area 2 (SA22018), urban rural (UR2018), and urban rural indicator (IUR2018). These new geographies are part of the Statistical Standard for Geographic Areas 2018 (SSGA18) which replaces the 1992 New Zealand Standard Areas Classification (NZSAC92). The statistical standard for geographic areas is to be used from 2018 (SSGA18). It defines the Stats NZ input and output geographic classifications and describes their primary purposes, and sets out requirements and guidelines for the creation and maintenance of statistical geographies.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Please note that a review of SA2 names was undertaken in early 2018. The review addressed issues with inconsistent naming and applied corrections, resulting in an update to this dataset applied in November 2018. All SA2 codes are unchanged.

For further information on individual higher geographies, refer to their metadata.

This data is derived from ‘Sales by region in current prices - quarterly’ and ‘Estimated resident population for regional council areas, at 30 June(1996+)’.

The regional retail sales data has been aggregated to create data for calendar years(2012 - 2017), which have then divided by the population estimate for the relevant region and year, to create the per capita sales figures. Sales figures exclude GST.

The retail industry groups include the following ANSZIC06 industries (this data is for 2017 ONLY):

Motor vehicles, parts, and fuel retailing:
Motor vehicles and parts
Fuel

Supermarkets and specialised food retailing:
Supermarket and grocery stores
Specialised food
Liquor

Other retailing:
Department stores
Furniture, floor-coverings, houseware, textiles
Electrical and electronic goods
Clothing, footwear, and accessories
Recreational goods
Hardware, building, and garden supplies
Pharmaceutical and other store-based retailing
Non-store and commission-based retailing

This dataset is the definitive version of the annually released statistical area 1 (SA1) boundaries concorded to higher geographies at 1 January 2018, clipped to the coastline. This statistical area 1 higher geographies 2018 file is a correspondence, or concordance, which relates SA1s to larger geographic areas or 'higher geographies'. The higher geographies contained in this concordance are: regional council (REGC2018), statistical area 2 (SA22018), territorial authority (TA2018), urban rural (UR2018), and urban rural indicator (IUR2018).The following geographies were introduced in 2018: statistical area 1 (SA12018), statistical area 2 (SA22018), urban rural (UR2018), and urban rural indicator (IUR2018). The statistical standard for geographic areas is to be used from 2018 (SSGA18). It defines the Stats NZ input and output geographic classifications and describes their primary purposes, and sets out requirements and guidelines for the creation and maintenance of statistical geographies. Statistical area geographies are aggregations of meshblocks optimised to be of similar population sizes to enable the release of low-level data. They are non-administrative areas that are in between meshblocks and territorial authorities in size. Statistical areas either define or aggregate to define urban rural areas, territorial authorities, and regional councils.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

A pseudo-geographic representation of New Zealand's Territorial Authority administrative areas that gives each area an equal visual weighting. This dataset helps map users visualise data for areas irrespective of their geographic size. In traditional geographic maps, small areas can be overshadowed by larger areas even if their values are equivalent.

Each hexagon represents a Territorial Authority or Auckland Local Board. All Territorial Authority Local Board (TALB) hexagons are the same size irrespective of the geographic size of the TALB. A TALB's hexagon is placed in a position which approximates its actual geographic location in relation to its neighbouring TALBs. In this cartogram the Auckland local boards have been separated from the rest of the country.

TALB is a combined classification of territorial authorities for New Zealand and local boards for Auckland Council. The TALB hexagon cartogram uses TALB2013_V1_00, the definitive set of territorial authority and local board boundaries for 2013 as defined by Stats NZ, as at 1 January 2013. This version contains 21 local boards in the Auckland Council.

This dataset is the definitive set of the annually released territorial authority subdivision boundaries at 1 January 2019, clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for map creation/cartographic purposes and may not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. Subdivisions are set up under the Local Government Act 2002 and Local Electoral Act 2001. A subdivision is a division of a community or local board area for electoral purposes. Subdivisions are defined at meshblock level and nest within community or local boards.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

This dataset contains census usually resident population counts from the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses by statistical area 2. It contains counts by age groups for the 2006, 2013, and 2018 Censuses, and percentage changes between the 2013 and 2018 Censuses.

The life cycle age groups are: under 15 years, 15 to 29 years, 30 to 64 years, and 65 years and over.

These statistical area 2 boundaries extend to the 12 mile limit and are as at 1 January 2018, for further information see Statistical Area 2 2018 (generalised).

This data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Some counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules. Values of ‘-999’ indicate suppressed data.

02 Feb 2020

This dataset was last updated on Stats NZ Geographic Data Service on 02 Feb 2020.

This dataset is the definitive set of annually released meshblock boundaries for 2020 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 53,596 meshblocks.

Stats NZ maintains an annual meshblock geography for collecting and producing statistical data. This allows data to be compared over time. A meshblock is the smallest geographic unit for which statistical data is collected and processed by Stats NZ. A meshblock is defined by a geographic area, which can vary in size from part of a city block to a large area of rural land. Each meshblock borders on another to form a network covering all of New Zealand, including coasts and inlets and extending out to the 200-mile economic zone. Meshblocks are added together to build up larger geographic areas such as statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), and urban rural. They are also used to define electoral districts, territorial authorities, and regional councils.

The following 16 meshblocks are outside the 12 mile limit and are not held in digitised form: 0016901, 0016902, 1588000, 3166401, 3166402, 3166600, 3166710, 3166711, 3195000, 3196001, 3196002, 3196003, 3196004, 3196005, 3196006, 3196007.

This generalised version has been simplified for rapid drawing and is designed for thematic or web mapping purposes.

Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007.

The meshblock classification can also be downloaded from the Stats NZ classification and concordance tool Ariā.
