The geographic areas file 2023 is a text file that classifies meshblocks into larger geographic areas, such as statistical areas, territorial authorities, and regional councils. You can use the areas file, also known as a concordance file, to see how the various geographic boundaries are related.
For each meshblock, there is a series of codes that link to any meshblock-defined geographic area. All areas are set as at 1 January of the specified year. Concordance files are available from different years, to enable data for the same area classification to be compared over time.
The areas file can be used in conjunction with the geographic boundary files available on Stats NZ's Geographic Data Service.
Geographic areas files for earlier years are also available on Stats NZ’s Geographic Data Service.
From 2020 onwards, names are provided with and without tohutō/macrons, as applicable. Where a descriptor column has a macron, the corresponding column name without a macron is suffixed with ‘ascii’.

The 2018 Census commuter view dataset contains the employed census usually resident population count aged 15 years and over by statistical area 2 for the main means of travel to work variable from the 2018 Census. The geography corresponds to 2018 boundaries.
This dataset is the base data for the ‘There and back again: our daily commute’ competition.
This 2018 Census commuter view dataset is displayed by statistical area 2 geography and contains from-to (journey) information on an individual's usual residence and workplace address* by main means of travel to work.
* Workplace address is coded from information supplied by respondents about their workplaces. Where respondents do not supply sufficient information, their responses are coded to ‘not further defined’. The 2018 Census commuter view datasets excludes these ‘not further defined’ areas, as such the sum of the counts for each region in this dataset may not be equal to the total employed census usually resident population count aged 15 years and over for that region.
It is recommended that this dataset be downloaded as either a CSV or a file geodatabase.
This dataset can be used in conjunction with the following spatial files by joining on the statistical area 2 code values:
· Statistical Area 2 2018 (generalised)
· Statistical Area 2 2018 (Centroid Inside)
The data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules. Values of -999 indicate suppressed data.
Data quality ratings for 2018 Census variables, summarising the quality rating and priority levels for 2018 Census variables, are available.
For information on the statistical area 2 geography please refer to the Statistical standard for geographic areas 2018.

This page contains an areas file for 2019 geographic areas.
Area files are text files that classify meshblocks into larger geographic areas, such as statistical area 2s, territorial authorities, and regional councils. You can use the area files, which are also known as concordance files, to map the types of digital boundaries (see Examples of geographic boundary layers) within the geographic hierarchy, to see how the various geographic boundaries link together.
For each meshblock, there is a series of codes that link to any meshblock-defined geographic area. All areas are set as at 1 January of the specified year. Concordance files are available from different years, to enable data for the same area classification to be compared over time.
The areas files can be used in conjunction with the geographic boundary files available on Stats NZ's Geographic Data Service. For earlier files refer to Geographic area files.

The labour market statistics information release combines data from three surveys to present a broad picture of the labour market.
From the Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS) we provide a picture of New Zealand's labour force – these statistics relate to employment, unemployment, and people not in the labour force.
The Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) estimates the demand for labour by New Zealand businesses – the levels and changes in employment, total weekly gross earnings, total weekly paid hours, average hourly and average weekly earnings, and average weekly paid hours in the industries we survey.
The Labour Cost Index (LCI) measures changes in salary and wage rates for a fixed quantity and quality of labour input. It is a measure of wage inflation, reflecting changes in the rates that employers pay to have the same job done to the same standard.

The Retail Trade Survey measures the sales turnover and stock levels of a wide range of businesses that provide household and personal goods and services. Retailers include car yards, petrol stations, supermarkets, department stores, hardware retailers, cafes and restaurants, hotels and motels, and other store-based and non-store-based retailers. Retail Trade Survey statistics are published quarterly for the following variables: sales value of goods and services, by industry, and region; sales volume, by industry; value of stock held, by industry.

This lookup table refers to the web service 2018 Census individual part 3b data by SA1.
The web service contains data from the 2018 Census only, no data from previous censuses has been included.
The individual (part 3b) dataset is displayed by statistical area 1 geography and contains information on:
• Total hours worked in employment per week
• Main means of travel to work, by usual residence address
• Main means of travel to work, by workplace address*
• Unpaid activities
The data uses fixed random rounding to protect confidentiality. Some counts of less than 6 are suppressed according to 2018 confidentiality rules. Values of ‘-999’ indicate suppressed data, and values of ‘Null’ indicate data not collected.
For further information on this dataset please refer to the Statistical area 1 dataset for 2018 Census webpage - footnotes for individual part 3b, Excel workbooks, and CSV files are available to download. Data quality ratings for 2018 Census variables, summarising the quality rating and priority levels for 2018 Census variables, are available.
